Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg) was fought on September
17, 1862. As the single bloodiest day in the Civil War,
more than 23,000 men were killed, wounded or missing in
action. Following this battle, President Abraham Lincoln
issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
Battlefield was established in 1890. A monument
was raised for "the Angel of the
Battlefield" which states the following:
During the battle of Antietam
September 17, 1862
Clara Barton brought supplies
and nursing aid to the wounded
on this battlefield.
This act of love and mercy
led to the birth of the present
NATIONAL RED CROSS.
