ROCK GARDEN

The stones are timid
where I put them
row on row

beneath
garden-fresh
shade trees.

Birds know this weather,
turn the wind aside,
come in,

come in this garden
of St. Francis
disguised in leaves,

statue of gray river rock
where snails debate
their fall

in circular argument
and find
a stone   a stone.
