Timeline: 1916

1914 | 1915 | 1916 | 1917 | 1918 | 1919

01/21-12/18: Siege of Verdun, the longest battle of the Great War, and bloodiest battle in history. French casualties: 542,000, German: 434,000.
05/31: Battle of Jutland. British and German fleets clash. Though losses are great on both side, the German fleet is severely weakened.
07/01-11/13: Battle of the Somme. Total British casualties: 420,000, French: 200,000, German: 450,000. Around this time, Allied airships reigned supreme, despite the menacing presence of the German Zeppelins.
