Thank you, Daralee, for your beautiful, detailed letter. I just read it.
We went to an art show opening in 29 Palms yesterday, so were tied up
in the glorious weather along the way. The rocks and stones and hills
were incredibly lovely wearing grays and blacks from the rainy weather.
Rainbows.
I bought a book of poems by David Lehman, The
Daily Mirror, which I think I mentioned to you. Anyway, it is a
great collection of his poems. He decided to write a poem a day, and that's
what he did--for a year. Then he selected those he thought held up the
best and published them as this book. I recommend what he did. I am doing
it. At first I was just prosaic and boring. Then I decided to write more
sharply, hone things down, find out what really bothers me. I am doing
better now I think. I am writing a lot of poems about my lung cancer.
Yesterday I even wrote a poem about the art show. I sat under one of the
paintings and wrote a poem!....
