Thank you for your letter. I needed that, as they say! As for dressing
up with [black] birds [as part of your Halloween costume], may I tell
you I had an encounter out here with a raven worthy of Hitchcock. It seems
there is this awful bird that for some reason has become kind of tame.
Why? He is no longer a member of his tribe. So he goes around from desert
house to desert house becoming friendly and looking for food. So I was
talking to him the other day--me acting like St. Francis--and he takes
a nip out of my arm. It hurt. I was bleeding a little bit. So I got me
a broom and chased him into the other county. Now when I see him, I raise
my cane at him, and away he flaps. No more Mr. Nice Guy. No more St. Francis.
love, and good luck with your birds! richard
