Drumming in the New Year

Thanks for your letter. It is so pleasant and warm up here I find it difficult
to believe that it is in fact time for New Years. But the calendar says
it is, so it is. Right? For the first time in many years we are having
people on New Years Eve. From 11:00 to midnight, more or less. Hope we
all maintain decorum and some sense of quietude. But how can we? Everyone
is bringing a drum. And drums were invented to make noise. Actually, they
were used by pariahs to let people know they were in the neighborhood.
So we will be a houseful of pariahs come New Years Eve. So be it. richard
