Fort Sumter National Monument

The Civil War began when the Confederate Army under General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard attacked this Charleston, South Carolina fort on April 12, 1861. The fort's commander, Union Major Robert Anderson, surrendered on April 14.

Fort Sumter National Monument was established by the National Park System on April 28, 1948.

Named for Thomas Sumter, "The Game Cock," the fort was built between 1830 and 1860.
