The
Somme: Beaumont Hamel

This
beautiful panorama is on the Somme -- looking across the
fields around Beaumont Hamel.
This was a scene of unimaginable horror -- mud, rotting
corpses, death and destruction -- the wasteland -- the
slough of despond -- in 1916. [Wilfred] Owen
suffered his shell shock in this area, down in the valley
in the middle distance. Nature has healed it today.
